Five frothy strands of heishi beads intersperse with lapis lazuli and amber tabs. The unusual gold and deep blue color combination is absolutely gorgeous. The tabs and tiny shell heishi beads are stung on silk; the colorful necklace is finished with traditional sterling silver cone-shaped terminals and fastens with a hook and eye clasp. Circa 1960.

Heishi (meaning "shell") beads are small disc or tube-shaped beads made of shells or stones, traditionally cut, polished, and drilled by hand. They originate with the Kewa Pueblo, previously known as the Pueblo of Santo Domingo, people of New Mexico.
